Celebrate International Women’s Day: Influential Women in Skincare

Every March 8th, women around the world are recognized for their strength, resilience, and the countless ways they’ve shaped society. International Women’s Day (IWD) is more than a date on the calendar; it’s a global invitation to pause, reflect, and celebrate the ongoing journey toward equality and representation.

At Deluvia, a family-owned brand led by women, we feel especially connected to this day. Our mission has always been about more than skincare; it’s about confidence, self-respect, and making space for moments that nourish not just the skin, but the person within.

This year, we’re celebrating IWD by exploring its roots, recognizing trailblazers in beauty and skincare, and sharing meaningful ways to mark the day through self-care rituals that restore and inspire.

A Brief History of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day was first observed in the early 1900s, arising from labor movements in North America and Europe. Women were demanding better pay, voting rights, and safer working conditions, a movement that resonated across borders and industries.

The first official National Women’s Day was held in the United States in 1909. By 1911, more than a million people across Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland participated in rallies. The momentum continued through the decades, and in 1975, the United Nations officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day.

Since then, the day has evolved into a celebration of achievements across political, social, scientific, artistic, and entrepreneurial domains. It’s also a reminder that the path to equality is ongoing, and that visibility, representation, and empowerment matter deeply in every space, including beauty.

Influential Women Who Shaped the Skincare Industry

Behind many of the innovations we now take for granted in skincare and cosmetics are women whose ideas, insights, and daring, helped change the face of the industry, literally and figuratively.

Madam C.J. Walker

Often credited as America’s first self-made female millionaire, Walker built a haircare empire in the early 1900s for Black women, creating products designed for their unique needs. She empowered not only customers, but employees, many of whom were women, giving them tools for financial independence and personal pride.

Elizabeth Arden

A pioneer in branding and luxury beauty, Arden didn’t just create skincare products; she opened salons, championed the idea of “the beauty ritual,” and helped establish the idea that skincare is a daily act of self-worth, not vanity. She was a power player before women even had the right to vote. At a time when makeup and cosmetics were considered improper, she was instrumental in changing how the world thought about beauty. Not only did she build an enduring global business empire, Ms. Arden helped establish an entire industry.

Beyond her branding genius, she famously sent beauty kits to suffragettes marching in white, with red lipstick included, showing that style and strength can coexist.

Anita Roddick

Founder of The Body Shop and one of the early champions of cruelty-free beauty and ethical sourcing. Roddick demonstrated that beauty can be responsible, inclusive, and values-driven. She opened her first Body Shop in 1976. She was always candid that nothing she made could stave off age or simulate gorgeousness, but you could have fun using it.

Why Self-Care Is a Celebration, Not an Indulgence

There’s been a shift in how we talk about self-care. Once dismissed as “pampering,” it’s now recognized as a form of preservation, especially for women who multi-task and juggle family, work, caregiving, and community roles every day.

But self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Sometimes, it’s as simple as a few quiet minutes with a face mask, a cleansing ritual before bed, or massaging in a moisturizer that feels good on tired skin. Those moments signal to your body and mind: you matter.

One customer recently shared that she uses her Deluvia skincare routine as a “daily reset,” a chance to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with herself before the day's chaos begins. For her, it’s not just about how her skin looks, though she loves the results; it’s also about how that ritual makes her feel.

Ideas for Celebrating International Women’s Day Through Self-Care

Not sure how to mark IWD this year? Here are a few ideas that honor the day by honoring yourself:

Create a Skincare Ritual with Meaning

Choose one skincare product, maybe your favorite aloe-rich moisturizer, and take your time with it. As you apply it, reflect on something you appreciate about your body, your strength, or your journey. This kind of intentional touch can feel grounding and powerful.

Support Women-Owned Brands

Whether it’s a face serum, a candle, or a hand-thrown ceramic mug, choosing to shop from women-led businesses is a form of economic empowerment. It’s one small way to invest in change.

Share a Compliment or Story

Write a note or text to a woman who’s made a difference in your life - your mom, a close friend, your mentor, or your colleague. These moments of connection ripple outward more than we realize.

Unplug for One Hour

Let the world go quiet for a bit. Brew some tea, grab your favorite book, and use that time to replenish, not for productivity, but for peace and to recharge your wellbeing.

Honor Her, Honor You

Whether you’re celebrating International Women’s Day with a group or on your own, we invite you to make space for something gentle and joyful, something that restores your sense of self. That might mean journaling, taking a walk, applying your favorite mask, soaking in a mineral salts bath, or simply choosing stillness for a few moments.

Self-care isn’t the opposite of activism. Sometimes, it’s the fuel for it. And in a world where women give so much of themselves every day, honoring your skin, your body’s outer expression of your inner life, is a beautiful place to start.
